Is Sunset Beach, NC Dog-Friendly?

The short answer? Yes, however, there are rules and guidelines for having dogs on the beach. While dogs are allowed on the beach year-round, during the summer season (Memorial Day to Labor Day), they are restricted to certain hours. All dogs walking on Sunset Beach must always be on a leash.

Pet owners are also expected to clean up after their dogs, meaning they must carry a bag to properly dispose of the waste. Failure to pick up dog waste will result in a $100 fine. Remember to also always be mindful of those around you, so everyone can enjoy the beach.

The Best Time to Visit the Beach with Your Dog

While the summer is a great time to visit Sunset Beach, it may not be the best time of year for you if you’re looking to maximize your shoreline time with your dog. To get as much time with your pet on the beach as possible, we’d recommend coming later in the spring, when the weather is warm and the days are longer, without worrying about your schedule. That being said, if you don’t mind the timing rules, summer is a great time to enjoy the ocean breeze during an early morning or a late-night dog walk along the beach.

What To Pack for a Pet-Friendly Beach Day

For a comfortable day at the beach with your pet, you’re going to want to bring more than a leash. Remember to pack fresh water for you and your pet and a collapsible bowl, along with your typical leash and bag that you’d bring on any other walk. Bringing water will ensure your pet doesn’t get thirsty and drink out of the ocean. A dog tag with some sort of ID is also a smart idea in case of emergencies.

On a longer beach day, think about finding ways to get your pet into shaded areas throughout the day, and bring a favorite toy they can entertain themselves with during downtime.

Keep Your Dog Safe on the Sand

While a day at the beach can be exciting for dogs, there are a few factors you should be aware of, from the sun to the sand, and of course, the saltwater. Before walking across the beach, check the sand with your own feet or hands to make sure it’s not too hot for your dog’s paws. You should also keep an eye out for shells, fishing hooks, and any other debris on the beach that your dog may try to chew or swallow.

Respect Local Wildlife

It bears repeating because it’s true. While Sunset Beach is an incredible getaway destination, it also serves as an ecosystem for shorebirds, sea turtles, and other wildlife. When visiting with your dog, stay on marked beach access paths, keep pets away from dunes, and avoid disturbing any marked nesting areas. Keep interactions between your dog and local fauna at an absolute minimum.

Pet-Friendly Activities in Sunset Beach

Even if you and your dog can’t visit the beach, there are still plenty of ways to have fun with your four-legged friend in the area.

Vereen Memorial Park and Gardens

This public park has been a hidden gem in Sunset Beach. This garden features a three-mile trail along with a boardwalk. The long walk gives you and your dog plenty of time to explore the park as well as its nearby waterway. Adding to the pet-friendly feel of the environment is the potty bag available on site!

Duplin Winery

Sit back and relax at this paw-inspiring attraction, situated at Barefoot Landing! Sip a glass of wine and bite-sized snacks alongside your dog on the patio, which is fully dog-friendly. Just remember to keep them on a leash!

Salty Dogs Cafe and Bark Bar

Enjoy craft cocktails while your dog gets out to play! Enjoy a drink and Coastal Carolina cuisine at any time of the day. Meet up with some friends to enjoy classics like the Riptide Reuben while your dog plays around at the off-leash dog park on site. While admission to the park is free, registration is required.
